Tung Ching-Lan Always on Road to Photography

"I grew up with your photos!"

Tung Ching-lan, who has just retired as head of the Taiwan Daily News' photography department, is usually made this remark by his readers. Tung is no stranger to most Kaohsiung residents. He had shot nearly 800,000 photos since 1961 when he started to work for the newspaper. All the photos, some as old as 40 years, are carefully preserved. As time went by, they have come to serve as precious records of life in the past.

Records of life in Kaohsiung

Tung had witnessed many impressive events in Kaohsiung. A photo of Ta Tung Elementary School's sports event happened to record life in Taiwan dated back to decades ago when most people were not able to afford to wear shoes. 20 years ago, Tung's photos depicting a child with rare Rh-blood type in urgent need of blood transfusion received wide attention. Finally, the child was saved by someone donating his blood of the same type after this report. Another event was about a dancing girl abducting a child. With joint efforts of media and the police, the lady finally agreed to return the child. Once, Tung risked his life covering the protest staged at a refinery of Chinese Petroleum when a stone hit his eye and blood streamed down his face. However, he insisted on seeking medical help until he got the job done.

His joy & his achievement

Tung develops negatives by himself because each photo is special to him. Sometimes he would work for 1 to 2 hours just to get a nice shot. Over the past 40 years, he had turned down many promotion offers, for he could only gain joy and the sense of achievement from shooting pictures.

Preservation of Kaohsiungs's memories

With the privatization of Taiwan Daily News, Kaohsiung Information Department is set to coordinate with Government Information Office and National History Museum hoping that Tung's photos can be housed in the museum to preserve the history of Kaohsiung City.
